Using Innovative Technology to Reduce Emissions at SoCalGas
Nationwide, emissions from natural gas distribution systems represent less than 1 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. At SoCalGas , one of Sempra Energy’s California utilities and the largest natural gas distribution utility in the United States, the company is utilizing an innovative gas capture technology to reduce emission levels even further.
Instead of following the standard process of venting natural gas to complete projects, SoCalGas is using the latest methane capture technology to capture the gas before it is released into the air. The gas is then compressed and put back into SoCalGas' system to be used by customers. The innovative technology not only minimizes the impacts of emissions on the environment; it helps to reduce noise in the surrounding neighborhoods.
SoCalGas first began using the methane capturing process about nine months ago and it has had big results. To date, the company has captured and reinjected about 900,000 cubic feet of natural gas back into its system. This is approximately equal to what 4,660 homes use each day on average in the U.S.
