Sempra Energy’s Commitment to Diversity Ranks Among Best in US

Sempra Energy’s dedication to diversity and inclusion has landed the company a top spot on Forbes’ "Best Employers for Diversity for 2019" list, released today.

Sempra Energy was ranked as the top utility on the list, and 20th overall, out of 500 major U.S. companies and institutions from various sectors.  

In alignment with the company’s strategic vision to be North America’s premier energy infrastructure company, Sempra Energy strives to foster a high-performance culture rooted in diversity and inclusion.

Diversity drives performance, and Sempra Energy is committed to continue making progress in that area as significant changes are expected in the energy sector over the next decade.

As part of Sempra Energy’s commitment to diversity, the company hires and develops the best talent across diverse backgrounds. Fifty-nine percent of Sempra Energy’s workforce -- and 52 percent of management -- are people of color. Thirty-one percent -- and 34 percent of management -- are women. Additionally, eight out of 14, or 57 percent, of the company’s board of directors are women and/or people of color.

Employee-driven diversity and inclusion councils, along with taking time to talk about the importance of diversity and inclusion, allows Sempra Energy to better understand bold ideas and fresh perspectives.

Companies were chosen and ranked for the "Best Employers for Diversity" list based on an independent survey from a representative sample of 50,000 employees working for companies employing at least 1,000 people in their U.S. operations. For the majority of the company’s score, respondents were asked open-ended questions on a series of statements surrounding the topics of age, gender equality, ethnicity, disability, LGBTQ+ and general diversity concerning their own employer.
