Giving Tuesday: Employees Support Hunger Relief in Communities They Serve
Imagine not knowing where your next meal will come from. This is the reality for about 40 million people, including 12 million children, in the U.S. In an effort to help address this nationwide issue, Sempra Energy employees and the Sempra Energy Foundation raise funds for hunger-relief organizations each year on Giving Tuesday.
Employees are encouraged to donate to hunger-relief organizations in the communities where the company operates. The Sempra Energy Foundation also provides a two-for-one match for every dollar donated by employees to the selected charities – so if one employee donates $10, that means $30 will be donated to the charity which is enough to provide about 150 meals to families and children.
Since 2014, company employees and the Sempra Energy Foundation have raised more than $610,000, enough money to provide 3.4 million meals to underserved families and children.
The hunger-relief organizations that are part of the two-for-one match this year are: San Diego Rescue Mission; Feeding San Diego; Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County; Los Angeles Regional Food Bank; Foodshare Inc. in Ventura County, Calif; FIND Food Bank in the Coachella Valley; Houston Food Bank; Southeast Texas Food Bank; and Three Square in Boulder City, Nev.
Giving Tuesday, celebrated globally on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, is dedicated to encouraging people to support charitable causes through events, social media, campaigns and collaborations.
