Sharing Works
(con't)
to develop physical
fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in
a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special
Olympics athletes and the community.”
It’s personal
For Pat Petersilia, it’s personal: Both of his sons
were born with fragile X syndrome, the leading inherited
cause of mental retardation. “The Special Olympics
really helped my sons, providing them with some great experiences
they just could not get any other way,” Petersilia
explains.
But, as a volunteer, Petersilia is hardly alone. He
is one of hundreds of employees from Southern California
Gas Co., San Diego Gas & Electric, Sempra Energy and
Sempra Global who often volunteer their time and support
for the Special Olympics. They help organize events in Santa
Barbara, San Diego, Los Angeles’ San
Gabriel Valley, Orange County and elsewhere in Southern California.
VIP raises $12,000
And, thanks to Sempra Energy’s Volunteer Incentive
Program (VIP), Petersilia and those hundreds of employees
get to put the company’s money where they volunteer
their time.
That’s because Sempra Energy donates $100 for every
employee who volunteers eight or more hours of his or her
time in a year to the Special Olympics or other qualified
nonprofit groups. For the Southern California Special Olympics,
alone, that amounted to more than $12,000 in donations last
year.
