Charitable giving assists disabled job seekers

Sempra Energy believes in diversity of giving and supports a broad spectrum of community groups.

And that's why, when disABLEDperson Inc. called Sempra Energy's Corporate Community Relations department for help, it got what it needed.

disABLEDperson Inc. is a small San Diego, Calif.-based, nonprofit group that links disabled Americans with employers who are looking to hire them via a national, online job-posting and referral service.

Sempra Energy's support is helping this group stretch its limited resources.

A helping hand
Founder Diana Malfa says people at Sempra Energy have always lent a helping hand, showing the group how to work with corporate human resources departments and government agencies.

Plus, a number of small grants from Sempra Energy have also helped pay for software upgrades for this "Monster.com" for the disabled. As a result, RecruitABILITY can accept job postings from companies, and worker resumes from agencies without manual re-entry of the data, greatly expanding the jobs and resumes database. It's a vital step toward helping the estimated 10 million disabled unemployed who are looking for work.

"Because of Sempra Energy's support, we are growing steadily," says Malfa. "We just received notice that we've been accepted into a California State Employees' Charitable Workforce giving campaign and the Combined Federal Campaign in San Diego. Also, disABLEDperson Inc. was invited by the Social Security Administration to serve as the anchor Employment Network at Ticket to Work Expos in six cities across the United States this summer.

"Our acceptance into these wonderful campaigns was because of our growth these last two years, with which Sempra Energy had a direct impact," she adds.

Quality of life
"We're proud of our long-standing commitment to the communities where we live and work," says Molly Cartmill, Sempra Energy's director of Community Relations & Corporate Events. "Helping a group like disABLEDperson Inc. that helps so many others is a great example of how we invest the time, talent and financial resources to improve the quality of life for our customers, neighbors and employees."
