Sharing Works
Sempra Energy and its companies were honored as the International Community Foundation (ICF) 2005 Philanthropist of the Year for the company's leadership and commitment to charitable giving along Mexico's northern border. Sempra Energy received the award on May 14 at the ICF's 15th annual gala in San Diego, Calif.
Partnership history
Sempra Energy's partnership with ICF began in 2000, when Sempra Energy set up the International Community Investment Fund at the ICF to research and make grants to local nonprofit groups that make a difference in communities outside the United States. In just five years, the company has funded more than 57 grants for more than $1.3 million through the company's donor-advised fund at the ICF.
"Our philosophy is to participate in communities where we conduct business, and, for that reason, we have supported projects in Baja California, Chihuahua and Coahuila, Mexico, as well as in Canada and Indonesia," says Molly Cartmill, director of Corporate Community Relations & Corporate Events. "These projects have also benefited from our employee Matching Gifts program and the voluntary efforts of local employees."
Commitment
"The commitment that Sempra Energy is putting forth to assist in the development of communities overseas and across the border is a clear example that corporate social responsibility beyond our immediate communities is becoming vital," said Richard Kiy, the ICF's president and CEO.
