2009 Year-in-Review

Founded in late 2007, the Sempra Energy Foundation remains dedicated to the environment, education, and helping communities in need. In 2009 alone, approximately $5 million dollars was awarded to over 175 organizations.

One of the Sempra Energy Foundation’s major accomplishments in 2009, was the first Environmental Champions Awards Initiative. This initiative awarded $1 million dollars to non-profit environmental organizations in Southern and Central California that focus their efforts on programs that protect our natural resources, that educate our communities about conservation and the environment and that help improve the environmental health and safety of our communities.

 

Another major accomplishment in 2009 was the Helping People in Need Initiative which was created by the Sempra Energy Foundation as a response to the tough economic times that challenged our communities in 2009. Through this initiative, the Sempra Energy Foundation awarded over one million dollars to over 65 organizations that help families with basic life needs in Central and Southern California. Employees of the Sempra Energy Family of Companies also participated in this initiative through additional financial contributions and volunteer time to these great causes.

In addition to these major initiatives, the Sempra Energy Foundation continued its support of community partners that are making a difference in our communities every day. Some examples include working with the San Diego Zoo in support of the Cans for Critters program, a recycling program that works with youth service groups. In addition, the Sempra Energy Foundation supported the Water Education Foundation on their My California Education and Outreach program which provides low-income and ethnically diverse youth with an opportunity to engage in issues of leadership, the environment and conservation. 2009 was an important year for the Sempra Energy Foundation. Our initiatives made significant impact in our communities and our partnerships were strengthened through the support of great organizations that day-to-day are dedicated to making our communities a better place to live. We look forward to a successful 2010.
