Education
Math / Science / Technology
We provide support to programs and initiatives
in the area of education that promote success
in the areas of math, science and technology. Additionally,
we fund educational opportunities that also
help to support environmental stewardship in
the areas of conservation, habitat restoration
and energy efficiency.
Zoological Society of San Diego:
The Sempra Energy Foundation partnered with the Zoological Society of San Diego to support conservation efforts in our region. Funds have been provided to benefit the San Diego Zoo's EnviroSchool program, which brings conservation programs into local schools; the 2009 Cans for Critters program, which encourages recycling throughout the community; and the Baja California Condor Education Effort, which works to raise awareness for this critically endangered species in the region.
Cool Globes Exhibit:
In late 2008, San Diego was host to the “Cool Globes: Hot ideas for a cooler planet” exhibit which raised awareness of global warming and was intended to inspire the public and the community to embrace solutions that can be implemented in everyday life. The Sempra Energy Foundation supported educational outreach programs with the objective of encouraging hundreds of children from underserved areas to learn from the globes in creative and interactive ways by funding guided tours of the globes, including child-friendly educational materials, games and a scavenger hunt in the exhibit guidebook.
USS Midway Museum:
In
partnership with the USS Midway Museum, the
Sempra Energy Foundation provides funds for
the “On Board” program, which
provides free classroom visits to the Midway
for Title 1 schools. In addition to teaching
students about the history of Navy, program
curricula includes components on energy and
water use, conservation and ways to be energy
efficient in today’s world.
Sempra Energy Foundation Math & Science
Alliance:
The
Sempra Energy Foundation is teaming up
with teachers in states like Arizona, Nevada,
Texas, California and Louisiana to support
math, science and technology programs in
classrooms.
YMCA:
The Sempra
Energy Foundation has partnered with the YMCA
of San Diego County to underwrite a series
of Green Days at over 20 local branches. Members
of all ages will be able to learn how to make
their communities cleaner and greener and will
participate in service projects at each of
the Y campuses.
New American’s Immigration
Museum:
A grant provided
by the Sempra Energy Foundation will enable
students to document their grandparents
and parents immigration to America. These
films and art projects will be featured
at the Museum as well as in a traveling
tour around the nation.
Big Brothers / Big Sisters:
As
part of a partnership with the Big Brothers
/ Big Sisters organizations, Sempra Energy
Foundation’s grant will provide for an
after-school mentoring and homework help program
for more than 20,000 San Diego military children.
