G. Joyce Rowland
G. Joyce Rowland is senior vice president of Human Resources and chief
ethics officer for Sempra Energy, a San Diego-based Fortune 500 energy services holding company
whose subsidiaries provide electricity, natural gas and value-added products and services.
The Sempra Energy companies' 13,500 employees serve more than 29 million consumers worldwide.
In her current position, Rowland is responsible for corporate human resources,
including compensation, health and welfare benefits, employee relations,
executive/leadership development, staffing, people research and affirmative-action/diversity
programs. She also is responsible for corporate security and human resource
information systems, and payroll.
Before that, Rowland was vice president of Human Resources and chief ethics
officer of Pacific Enterprises, the parent company of Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas), a job
she held from 1995 to 1998.
From 1990 to 1995, Rowland served as manager of Labor Relations at SoCalGas where negotiated a number of major changes
in long-standing agreements. Prior to that, she was manager of Personnel
Relations and Planning. In 1987, she served as Community Involvement manager
and, later, was promoted to manager of Consumer Affairs.
She joined SoCalGas in 1980 as an organization and compensation
specialist, and she held a range of jobs in Human Resources between 1980
and 1987.
Rowland has a master’s degree in business administration with
a concentration in industrial relations and a bachelor’s degree
in psychology (graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) from the
University of California at Los Angeles. She also completed the Executive
Education Program at the University of Michigan and has a number of certifications
including, CEBS (Certified Employee Benefits Specialist), CCP (Certified
Compensation Professional) and SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources).
Rowland is an alumna of the “2001 American Issues Forum of LEADERSHIP
AMERICA.” She is also a member of a number of professional groups,
including the Society for Human Resource Management, World at Work and
Blue Cross of California's consumer relations committee.
